MOVING… UNIT 6 in Semester 2

Unit 6 is in ALGEBRA Semester 2, as of Monday all of the Daily Activities will be there.

LESSONS – Read this please

I notice that (a) many of you are not doing the lessons and (b) some of you are not completing the lessons. To get credit you MUST click the “END LESSON” button on the table of contents.

TAKE NOTES!!!!!!!
NEAT ONES!
ORGANIZED! (spiral notebook! In order by date!)
Hint: Show your parents your algebra notes everyday and ask if they can make sense of what you wrote…. if they can not, you need to work on taking better notes.

Sometimes do the lesson MORE THAN ONCE
This is how you learn how to do the material. Expect to be lost if you do not do the lessons and do a good job of going through them carefully.

Graph Paper and Graphing

If you look at the top of Module 5 I added a link so you can download graph paper.

http://ohsmoodle.cusd.com/mod/resource/view.php?id=6772

You have to be able to show me that you can graph a line.

For some unit 5 assignments you will need to be able to draw lines in powerpoint and upload your presentation to google docs.  Please post in the unit forum if you’re having trouble with that.

Steps for making a powerpoint and using geogebra

  1. if you haven’t already go to www.geogebra.org and download the program
  2. Open Geogebra
  3. View->Grid
  4. You can click on the plus sign arrow button to move the grid around if you want.
  5. Click on the button that has a dot and an A.  You can place dots all over the workspace.   Plot your points
  6. Next to that button is a button to draw lines.  Just click on one dots then click on a 2nd dot and the line is automatically drawn for you.
  7. Take a screenshot
PC: you hold down the alt key and hit the print screen (prtsc) button.
Mac: hold down the command and the shift and the 4 key.
  8. Open up Powerpoint
  9. Make a title screen with your name and what the assignment is.
  10. Make a new screen PASTE (ctrl V) if you’re using a PC
Insert the screenshot you made if you’re a MAC.
  11. Make text boxes to put down what the equation was you graphed and any other information you need to share.
  12. Create a new page in PowerPoint so you can put your next one in.
  13. Go back to Geogebra and make another line (either start a new geogebra file, which is what I do, or delete the old dots and lines)
  14. Repeat the screenshot deal into PowerPoint until you have all your graphs.
  15. Save your PowerPoint as FirstLastAssignmentTitle
    Example: AliceKeeler5.04agraphing
  16. UPLOAD YOUR PowerPoint to google docs.
  17. In the upper right hand corner it says “share”
  18. Get the link to share
Consider checking the let them edit check box.  Then I can help you if you give me the rights to edit.
  19. Copy and paste that URL into Moodle as a live link so I can view your project.

TAKE UNIT 4 TEST NOW

Unit 4 test is due! You will be allowed to retake, but you need to start taking the test NOW and even if you have to take it 20 times, keep practicing and retaking.  Ask for help, you’ll get there!

2nd Semester – getting it together

Well… we’ve all had a semester to get use to online learning.  I bet like myself you’ve learned a lot.

mountainofpaperOne thing I hope you learned is that learning on your own time is not “do the work whenever you feel like it.”  Let’s be honest, then you don’t do it and you get way behind and it feels like you have to climb a mountain to catch up.  On your own time means you don’t have class at 8am, you could do it at 9pm.  Regardless, you should be spending an hour to an hour and 45 minutes on math a day.

I have never heard anyone say online learning is easier, it is ALWAYS more work!  The trade off is that you have more control of your life and can schedule your life with more flexibility.  The time you save each day is traveling to and from school and let’s be honest there are lots of things like passing time, collecting homework, taking attendance, etc…. that take up a good chunk of the school day and you aren’t actually learning things during that time.

So online learning takes MORE WORK, but you should save some time in travel and reducing the amount of “administration” that goes on at a school… minutes where you are not learning things but still have to be at school.

So how much time should you be spending on online school everyday?  If you are only spending a couple of hours… you are expecting to fail.  How much time do you spend in a traditional school.  8am  – 2:40 is six and a half hours of school time PLUS HOMEWORK! How much time should a student be spending on homework each day? 6 classes…. 2-3 hours is probably pretty accurate.  So 6 + 3 = 9 hours a day.

If you fail to plan… you plan to fail!

plannerYou are not going to be successful without having “work hours.” You need to treat school like a full time job!  When are you going to do your up to 9 hours of work a day?  Don’t watch TV, find a place that is free of distractions, have paper and pencil, notebooks, binder, etc…. YOU NEED TO BE ORGANIZED!!!!! All successful people keep an organizer/calendar.  It is not good enough to put down “work on math.”  You need to extensively plan out your day everyday!  When do you eat breakfast? when do you take a break? For how long? When are you going to do Algebra lesson 4.09  and when are you going to do your 5-03 history assignment?

Keep a binder! Print out your assignments, keep your notes and work organized.  What if I were to go to your house and get all of your school stuff and put it on the desk of the manager where you are trying to get a job.  What does your organization say about you?  Does it say you are reliable? Does it say you have a plan? Does it say this is a guy I want working for me?

How to be successful in math

  • At the beginning of each week PRINT OUT THE MOODLE PAGE
  • HOLE PUNCH this and put it in your binder.
  • As you complete a lesson or activity, CROSS IT OFF! Mentally this helps you to realize you are making progress.
  • At the beginning of the week mark down ALL THE LESSONS AND ASSIGNMENTS into your planner/calendar so you don’t miss your due dates.
  • Try try try try!!!! Some of my face to face kids had to retake their tests 23 times… some only took the test once.  It varies person to person and unit to unit. SO DO NOT GIVE UP!  So what if you have to take a test/homework assignment 50 times, it is about learning something.
  • Ask for help, post questions, try try try!
  • Keep a SPIRAL NOTEBOOK with all of your notes and work neatly organized!  Put a TITLE and DATE on EACH page!
  • NO CHICKEN SCRATCH!
  • I can’t help you if I can not see what you are doing, so on a regular basis take a picture of a couple of your problems and turn that in along with your assignments.
  • If possible go to target and get the livescribe pulse pen (www.livescribe.com).  It is a little pricey but I promise it will make doing your math homework easier.  You can do your work on the notebook and it very easily uploads to the internet and you get a link that you can turn in so I can see your work.  Then I can help you and you have evidence to turn in which gives you more points!
  • DO NOT MISS YOUR DUE DATES! Be ready to turn in SOMETHING for 4.09 on Monday 1/25.
  • Lessons are worth 10 points, do them! Make sure you click the “end lesson” button on the table of contents. They are effort only, so take notes and keep on top of that!
  • Instant message and chat with the teacher regularly!
  • DO NOT GIVE UP!  You are here to learn, so if you have to do a homework assignment over and over until you get the score you want, so be it!

Finish 4.08 by Friday!

Ask for help if you need it!

Final Results

I THINK if you go to www.quia.com/studentZone and click on the class where cos algebra teacher is the teacher you can look up your finals results.  Although you should have been able to see them when you submitted your final.  I did go through them though and already awarded some points for typos and obvious errors.  I left some feedback for some people, I’m trying to get a once through first though.

I notice many of you have some questions were you were not far off and it was obvious you knew what you were doing, so I’m excited to get the papers with your work on them, this may increase or decrease your grade.  I did say that your work would be part of your grade.  So hopefully you showed me that you know something :)

Thanks everyone!

Mrs. Keeler
